Guest Post by Valentino Tailors

We have a Friday treat for everyone. Enzo Valentino of Valentino Tailors was kind enough to do a guest post about the alteration process for wedding gowns. We have had the pleasure to work with many of Enzo’s brides to fit them for their undergarments before beginning the alteration process. Thank you Enzo!

Altering a bridal or formal gown is a unique process.  Just like renovating a building, it helps to have a plan in place before the work begins.  When we first speak with our client, we discuss their expectations and then review the alterations plan with them.  It is important to consider the designer’s original intent, the client’s wishes and the limitations of the alteration process.  Next we plan the sequence of alteration work and fittings. Altering one part of the dress may impact another part, for instance, taking in the bodice of a gown may affect the hem length of the dress. This is why the hem and bustle are the very last steps in the alteration process.  We typically start at the top and work our way down.  But, before any alterations can begin, it is imperative that the client have the correct undergarments or foundations for her dress, as well as the specific shoes that she will be wearing with the gown.  If those items are not yet purchased, then the alteration process cannot begin.

We are very thankful that Josie from Beneath The Gown has been able to assist our clients in finding the right undergarments for their gowns. Josie is also skilled at customizing the undergarments to properly fit the client for comfort and provide the right support to the particular style of dress.  I have seen too many clients purchase the wrong style undergarments or the incorrect fit, and it can really hurt the look and alterations plans for the gown.
